The DOCJT is comprised of the Commissioner's Office and three divisions-Training Operations, Administrative and Training Support. Within the Commissioner's Office and each division are sections, which are assigned specific responsibilities. Instruction is provided by 85 law enforcement training instructors, who are supported by a 70 member administrative and executive staff. Instructors are required to have at least three years of law enforcement experience and a bachelor's degree, or a combination of experience and education, to teach at the DOCJT. Instructors in the Legal Section must have a law degree and membership in the Kentucky Bar Association.

In March 2003, the Department of Criminal Justice Training became the first public safety training academy in the United States and Canada to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) under its newly created program, Public Safety Training Academy Accreditation. Accreditation requires compliance with a predetermined number of nationally recognized standards and benefits every agency trained by the DOCJT by strengthening their position in litigation involving officer training. The Kentucky Law Enforcement Foundation Program Fund (KLEFPF) rewards training by means of a salary supplement and determines eligibility for participation in the program by agencies as specified in KRS 15.310 to .510. Reimbursements of over $1.8 million are issued monthly to eligible participating agencies.
