The
Department of Criminal Justice Training has the most up-to-date
facilities to train Kentucky’s officers. In September
2002, the agency completed the John W. Bizzack Law Enforcement
Training Complex. The first phase of the department’s
new law enforcement training complex is a $20 million, 127,000
square-foot facility featuring classrooms and residence hall.
The J. Bernard Thompson Residence Hall has 135 dormitory rooms,
laundry room, recreation room, library and computer lab. The
Joseph Schwendeman Academic Center includes classrooms, fitness
training facilities, a model police station, communications
center and office space for basic training staff.
Phase II of the project is a $7 million multipurpose training
facility, which was completed in early 2003. The 60,000 squarefoot
building features training facilities for physical fitness
and defensive tactics, including a one-eighth mile climate
controlled indoor running track with a cushioned surface.Also
included in Phase II is a 10,000 square-foot driving simulator
facility. This new complex established
Kentucky as
having one
of the premier law enforcement training centers in the nation.
Professional development and telecommunications courses, as
well as the executive staff, are housed in the Funderburk
Building. The 92,000-square-foot facility was specifically
designed for training Kentucky’s law enforcement officers.
It includes a complete, fully functional telecommunications
(LINK/NCIC) training center. It also features large classrooms,
modern laboratories, staff offices and an executive suite
that includes the commissioner’s office, directors’
offices and a conference room.
